GOVT KEEN ON FORMULA FOR CONTROLLING DIGITAL
Despite all previous assurances that the government will not attempt to curb freedom of expression, the truth outs, it will try to the utmost to rein in whatever is inconvenient. I&B Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore has just done a Pontius Pilate act washing this hands off the regulations, pushing on the agenda to a freshly constituted government department for exploring the scope of regulating online media and content.
In Rathore speak, a committee has been given the job for "framing regulations for online media/news portals and online content, including digital broadcasting, which encompasses entertainment/infotainment and news/media aggregators." Significantly, the assumption that the government is sharpening its claws to dig into digital may be corroborated by the fact that none of the top players in India's online media may be consulted.
Interestingly, there may be a consensus amongst leading politicians cutting across party lines that such regulations are in the interest of the establishment. What irks the powers that be isn't mischief by Desi players, but it left unregulated and unless threatened, there may be a possibility that players from overseas may try to dominate public opinion in India. Such may have been the concerns behind constituting the inter-ministerial committee to suggest guidelines for investment in Critical National Infrastructure, Digital Broadcasting and related issues.
